You probably saw the same headline I did..It was in the Western Standard: “Tabarnaxxed! Quebec to tax those who refuse the jab”.There he was, the Premier of Quebec François Legault dropping the bombshell news..“I’m announcing that we are currently working on a health-care contribution that will be charged to all adults in Quebec who refuse to get vaccinated,” Legault told reporters..“All people who are not vaccinated for non-medical reasons will have to pay a contribution.”.It’s the beginning of the end. .The end of freedom as we know it. It was bound to happen as the feds and the provinces struggled with the pandemic. Not knowing what to do and inventing policy on the go..A “Stalinist” premier, taking control over his populace, no matter what they think or say. Nothing new here, folks..But I hate to say, I saw it coming. I saw it well before anyone else did..This was years back..At that time I had a job and a house in Citadel and a wife. But things were starting to fall apart. The wife had had enough. .Truth be told, I drank a lot and maybe I wasn’t the best husband/father. Over 20 years of marriage, things change..Anyway, I was sleeping in the basement on a cot, where it was nice and cold, when suddenly I heard the doorbell ring, again and again..I barely had time to throw on some sweat pants and rush upstairs, without my glasses. I automatically opened the door without even looking..To my shock, a half dozen or so Calgary police officers with what looked like automatic weapons stormed into my house! .I thought, what the goddam hell? It was scary, these looked like SWAT-team types. Guys who would gun you down and ask questions later..I thought, holy f–k. What did I do now?.They cornered me in my kitchen … me, not fully dressed, half-awake, wondering what the hell was going on..Suddenly, a sergeant … or, at least I think it was a sergeant … started shouting at me. He started yelling … reading from some kind of statement..Long story short, my wife had left me and they were checking on me following this breakup. .Again, I had no idea what was going on. I asked them, where was my wife and if she was OK. They refused to answer..Brandishing their weapons, they kept asking me personal questions. It seemed like they were trying to paint me into some kind of corner, so I played it cool..One officer, circling my kitchen island, asked me if I had suffered a tragic loss lately. Obviously, they had accurate intelligence. A friend of ours had died tragically and it had devastated me..But I would be damned if I would admit it to these invading bastards..The bizarre interrogation went on and on. More personal questions, more shouting from the big-chested sergeant, who seemed to enjoy berating me..At one point, I had a bizarre idea. I was going to tell the sergeant: “I guess this is not a good time to do my Trailer Park Boys Bubble impersonation.”.But then, I thought. No, he’ll just go nuts on me. .To keep a long story short, it finally ended with one officer asking if he could go downstairs and view my cot. I said fine, go ahead..Instead, I should have said — and this has bothered me for decades — I should have said, as Tevya said to the Russian policeman, in Fiddler on the Roof, “Get off my land!”.Why I didn’t say this, I don’t know. It is a big regret to this day..Suffice to say, I suffered from PTSD for years thanks to this evil intrusion into my life. I talked to professionals, I talked to priests, I talked to friends, I talked to lawyers..I would learn, that it was “a check on welfare” … nothing I could do about it. For whatever reason, the CPS chose to beat me up psychologically and beat me up good..But on that day … on that very day … I realized, freedom had ended. Man, did it ever end..The police could terrorize anybody they wanted to, on the most flimsy of excuses..Terror made in Calgary. How wonderful..But hey, let’s not leave you without a happy ending. I worked hard, very hard, kept my nose to the ground, became the best Calgarian and Albertan anyone could possibly be..Today, I’m proud to say I worked diligently for everything I’ve earned, over my 35 years of media experience in Canada and Asia..Even my daughter loves me. And Burt the cat, too..And if those cops decide to bust down my door again on me and my cat without a legal warrant? .I’ll be ready this time, heh heh … oh yeah, I’ll be ready..Dave Makichuk is a Western Standard contributor. .,He has worked in the media for decades, including as an editor for the Calgary Herald.
