The following letter to the editor is written privately and is not the opinion of the Western Standard or any of its columnists.Readers are welcomed to submit short letters relating to materiel in the Western Standard and current issues at publisher@westernstandardonline.com..On January 27th, an Peter Downing was quoted in the Western Standard as saying that the Freedom Conservative Party “inherited a big problem” by accepting me and some of my friends onto their board. I would like to respond to Peter by thanking him for the trust he put in me to begin the process of starting the provincial wing of the Wexit movement. I took that trust very seriously and all of my actions were motivated by doing what I considered to be in the best interests of the independence movement in Alberta..In the time that I was involved with the Wexit Alberta group we had been asked several times by prominent members of the business community if the words ‘Wexit Alberta’ had been trademarked. Peter – as the founder of Wexit – indicated that this was not the case and was unconcerned even though somebody outside the movement had already trademarked the single word ‘Wexit’ days after the Federal election. Uncomfortable with the situation as it was, I did what I thought was in the best interest of the movement at the time. .As the Interim Leader of Wexit Alberta I trademarked the name ‘Wexit Alberta.’ This was a precaution so that no other group would take the name. Apparently, the trademark issue was more important to Peter than he let on and I was ‘fired’. .Some have rightly asked why the trademark is in my personal name. The fact is, there was no organizational structure to purchase the trademark through. There may be a society that conducts WEXIT business now, although I don’t know if that is the case or not. There was not one in November and I acted in what I thought was the best interest of the movement. .I wish Peter and the federal group all the best. I will continue to be a voice for independence in Alberta and will continue with my aim of building bridges not only between all of the pro-independence groups in Alberta but indeed among Albertans of every political stripe and walk of life. .Our province and the people who live here are amazing and they deserve the very best representation we can give them. This is no longer to be found within Canada. We are a resilient bunch and we will build something truly spectacular in this land, something that will benefit our children, their children and generations to come..I cast my focus forward and envision a free and sovereign Alberta. Having the privilege of playing even just a small role in helping this come to fruition is an honour..The journey toward Alberta Independence has officially begun! .Kathy Flett is the former Interim Leader of WEXIT Alberta and is a Board Member of the Freedom Conservative Party of Alberta. The following letter to the editor is written privately and is not the opinion of the Western Standard or any of its columnists.Readers are welcomed to submit short letters relating to materiel in the Western Standard and current issues at publisher@westernstandardonline.com.
