General William Westmoreland, who commanded American forces in Vietnam and watched victory slip away, loved to quote the old Mark Twain observation that “There are lies, damn lies and statistics.”.Westmoreland was referring to how numbers could be used against you every time and how the United States retreat from Vietnam was largely a result of bad press that really began after the American media decided the Tet Offensive of 1968 was a huge victory for the Vietcong and a disaster for the U.S..Conservative Party of Canada leadership candidate MP Pierre Poilievre is getting the same routine from the Canadian media and from a lot of red Tories who honestly think it's dangerous to talk about things like “freedom.” I’m not making this up — “Conservative” Tasha Kheiriddin recently expressed concern that talking about freedom may “turn off some Canadians.” .Yes, it really turns off Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and most of the mid-wits in the Liberal cabinet who don’t think you should have any freedom except what they allocate to you..So we shouldn’t be surprised a new Leger poll conducted in conjunction with the Association for Canadian Studies makes the outrageous suggestion that Poilievre is just fine for conservative voters, but just won’t wash with Canadians in general..It isn’t even a real poll, but one of those online survey that utilizes a “representative panel.” What does that mean? It means the poll is phony and based on the opinions of a lot of Liberals and socialists who Leger thinks represents real Canadians. .The “poll” says 44% of Conservative voters support Poilievre while just 17% think former Quebec Liberal Premier Jean Charest should lead the party. So put those numbers together and you get 61%: does that mean that 39% of Conservatives are backing a third candidate? No, none of the other candidates scores above 10% so we have a basic number-crunching problem here..But the Leger “poll” also notes Charest is supposedly supported by 22% of Canadians while Poilievre falls short with 16%..Are we getting the message? Normal people like Charest because he is a red Tory in a sweater who doesn’t talk about things like freedom and deregulation and privatizing the CBC. He is just so Canadian. .But an Abacus poll of 2,700 adult Canadians conducted from July 22-27, says that it’s not Poilievre who scares Canadians, but Justin Trudeau. The Trudeau government only gets 34% approval in this survey with 51% rejecting it — you can’t go to sleep with those numbers if you’re a Liberal expecting to fool the public one more time..Abacus also found that only 33% of Canadians believe we are going in the right direction, a drop of 10 points from the year before..Disapproval of Trudeau personally was also at 51%, with only 31% only giving the prime minister the thumbs up. Trudeau is getting into territory that's also occupied by the hapless U.S. President Joe Biden..Who is scarier to Canadians, Trudeau or Poilievre? Trudeau by a long shot, with a negative approval rating of -20, compared to -7 for Poilievre..The poll doesn’t get into Charest. Quite frankly, he has become irrelevant..Considering Trudeau is still being lauded by much of the state media as a still fascinating politician who's worshiped by the masses, while Poilievre is depicted as a dangerous, right-wing adventurer. It seems like Canadians actually can see through this this smear campaign..Clearly, the mainstream media has accepted the fact Poilievre is going to win the Conservative Party leadership. That sort of became obvious when former Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced he supported the Ontario MP as the candidate who could not only beat Trudeau, but the leader who most effectively criticized Trudeau and the Liberals..So now the media is focused on defining Poilievre as the candidate of the few and not the majority. Why couldn’t the Conservatives have seen the wisdom of putting another Liberal in as leader and just get with the program?.If you want to know who's exciting voters, go to a Poilievre rally and see the enthusiasm. It is palpable and very real. Trudeau hasn’t had a rally in a long time and every time he makes a public appearance, he is dogged by protesters and voters telling him it is time to go..So expect to see more “polls” that are really just Liberal wish dreams. The Toronto Star will be saying Poilievre is unfit to be prime minister until he wins the next election and then it will opine the end of Canada is near. .But if Poilievre governs as he has promised, it will be the end of left-wing media getting subsidized by your tax dollars to tell you things you know are lies.
