Leader of the People's Party of Canada (PPC) Maxime Bernier said he wants to reopen the debate around abortion, claiming it is "not normal" for women to be getting late-term abortions.."We are the only country in western civilization that does not have a law on abortion. We must be able to have that discussion and open the debate on abortion," he said..Bernier sat down with Michael Thiessen of Liberty Coalition Canada on Friday to discuss his party's stance on the issue. Bernier, who left the Conservative Party in 2018 to form the PPC, said he is 100% against late term abortions and sex-selective abortion.."For me, it is murder. We are not promoting life in our society right now. We are promoting death," he said..Bernier said during the last election, he spoke with a few PPC candidates that said they were against abortion and wanted to table a bill in parliament on it. "I said for sure, table that bill. You'd be free to do so," he said..Bernier said mainstream politicians are afraid to discuss the issue of abortion because, "the mainstream media will kill you."."During the last election, the media were saying, 'oh Bernier doesn't have the right to speak about that because he's a man.' They said it must be 'my body, my choice,' but it was not the same thing for COVID-19 vaccines," he said.."It won't be popular to speak about abortion if you can't speak about it at all. Something that is just and true won't always be popular. But we need to speak about it so it can become popular," he said..Bernier said he believes that when "pro-choice" Pierre Poilievre becomes leader of the Conservative Party, he will follow in the footsteps of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and prohibit any MPs from tabling bills on abortion. But Bernier said he would not do that in the PPC.."During the last election I spoke with PPC candidates that said they were 100% against abortion and wanted to table a bill parliament on it. I said for sure, table that bill. You'd be free to do so," he said.
