Purdue Pharma Canada has agreed to a first-of-its-kind settlement in Canada after the British Columbia government advocated for the opioid manufacturer to recover healthcare costs. .“BC's efforts to negotiate this unique settlement, together with other Canadian governments, paves the way for additional settlements to be reached in the ongoing litigation against other manufacturers and distributors of opioid products,” said British Columbia Attorney General David Eby in a Wednesday press release. .The press release said the British Columbia government began this class action lawsuit on behalf of the federal, provincial, and territorial governments in Canada and enacted the Opioid Damages and Health Care Costs Recovery Act in 2018. It said the aim of this lawsuit and legislation is to be reimbursed for health care costs. .British Columbia alleges opioid manufacturers engaged in deceptive marketing practices to boost sales that led to higher rates of addictions and overdoses. Purdue Pharma is one of more than 40 manufacturers named in the lawsuit. .The proposed settlement with Purdue Pharma totals $150 million in damages. This amount is the largest government health claim lawsuit in Canadian history. .The agreement has to receive final approval from the courts, which is expected in the next few months. .“BC is using all the tools in the toolbox to tackle the ongoing public health emergency,” said British Columbia Mental Health and Addictions Minister Sheila Malcolmson. .The press release said British Columbia will continue to fight until the remaining defendants have been held accountable. .“We know that no amount of money can bring back those who have died, but we are committed to holding corporations and others accountable for acts of alleged wrongdoing committed in the manufacturing and distribution of opioid products,” said Eby.
