Former Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said Bill C-11, which would regulate internet content, is another historical example of governments stifling free speech under the guise of keeping people safe.."And that's exactly what the Liberals are doing as well: creating a phantom, bogus threat that they need to protect us from," he said. "And so they're going to give themselves massive power to regulate the internet.".In a video posted to his Twitter on Thursday, Scheer said Bill C-11 will give the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) "a lot more control over what you can see and post online."."They will be able to make new regulations don't have to pass through Parliament. With the stroke of a pen, the CRTC can make new rules about what you post and what you can see online," Scheer said.."They're even going so far to start to regulate what users who make revenue off their YouTube channels have to comply with.".Scheer said the issue is not just with Bill C-11 or the CRTC, but with the stifling of free speech. He said as the "radical left get increasingly angry and intolerant" they stop being interesting in debating ideas and instead advocate for censorship.."A telltale sign that a government is getting too big and too intrusive into our lives is always that it attacks free speech," Scheer said. "When you go back and look at authoritarian regimes, they always start with attacking freedom of expression. And it's always done in the name of protecting you.".Scheer cited historical examples of tyrannical governments stifling free speech, such as the guillotines that happened to those who spoke out during the French Revolution, and the Berlin Wall, "which was originally called the 'anti-fascist wall.'".According to Scheer, tyrannical governments always take away civil liberties by saying it's being done to protect people.."Now Justin Trudeau tells us to just trust him, that this isn't about limiting fundamental rights. This is the same guy who froze the bank accounts of grassroots donors who are supporting protests for freedom," Scheer said..Scheer said "every Canadian" should be concerned about how Bill C-11 could trample on free speech, and encouraged people to write to their MPs. ."We must make sure we live in a society where even if we don't like what's being said, we protect people's right to say that healthy debate of ideas that clash of perspectives. That's what produces better results."
