The Saskatchewan government is considering a digital identification system it said would be optional for residents of the province with the aim of facilitating better access to government programs..Since early 2020, the government of Saskatchewan has been a member of the Digital ID and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC)..The DIACC lists its strategic goals on its website, and topmost on its agenda is to “create, publish, and evolve the Pan-Canadian Trust Framework and identify the legislative needs to support the vision,” and to “accelerate interoperability by securing adoption of the Pan-Canadian Trust Framework by businesses and governments,” reads the web page summary..The Pan-Canadian Trust Framework’s (PCTF) remit is described on the DIACC’s website..“The Pan-Canadian Trust Framework is designed to meet current and future Canadian digital identity ecosystem innovation needs by verifying trust of services and networks. PCTF documents and artifacts are intended to secure interoperability of public and private sector identity capabilities while prioritizing user-centred design, privacy, security, and convenience of use,” the web page says..“Essentially when someone is applying for some type of government service, they can expedite it. Right now you either have to travel to a government office somewhere for it or, if you do it online frequently, you’re on hold or you have to wait for a PIN number to come in the mail,” Jim Reiter, minister responsible for SaskBuilds said to CTV News..Companies interested in developing the system are currently submitting proposals to the province..“It’s essentially a photo ID much like a driver’s licence, just like we have a hard copy, it would be a digital version of it so people can do those kinds of applications right online,” added Reiter..China has set the global bar for the digitization of personal identification systems amongst developed nations and can offer a framework of understanding for Western countries to follow suit..“China’s digital transformation is already having a profound impact on its own economy, and is likely to have an increasing influence on the worldwide digital landscape.
