As Darryl Davies marks another Canada Day in the national capital, he sees a nation falling apart..In an interview with Western Standard, the Carleton University criminology professor said the rebranding of July 1 to “New Day” at The Forks in Winnipeg demonstrates how far the country has fallen..“A new day. Honest to God, Lee, what are they drinking?...A new day? Give me a break,” Davies said with a laugh..“It's become a juggernaut of stupidity….It is beyond farcical. I can't even believe we're talking about this. If I had set out to create a country that was completely and utterly dysfunctional, I would have created what they've created with this woke mentality, because that's what it's become.”.Davies, who was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and is now 74, says those who disagree with wokeness are unduly trampled on..“It's become a situation where it doesn't matter what you say, somebody can file a complaint against you, and due process goes out the window. And it's all this woke mentality. That's what it's come down to. Quite frankly, it is the era we're living in. .“The poet W. H. Auden used to refer to the 20th century as ‘the age of anxiety.’ Well, the 21st century is the age of idiocy, there's no question. And the reality is that our freedoms are being taken away from us, the ability to be able to express an opinion,” Davies explained..“It's become a juggernaut of stupidity. It is just absolutely bizarre — the world is bizarre, especially in Canada right now. So much so that a friend of mine today — and he fought for this country, he's a veteran — said that he absolutely is outraged and disgusted by what he sees going on. And I'm not surprised. It is what it is.”.Davies, who has lived in Ottawa and taught at Carleton University the past 20 years, believes the Trudeau Liberal government has fostered the predicament the country is in. .“We've got a system that has gone, absolutely. It's madness. That's what it is. And, it has been nurtured, developed, and fed by this Trudeau machine that has just destroyed so many of the values and freedoms. We have landmarks being renamed, statues being destroyed, our history being evaporated or eradicated. I always understood that a nation that did not know its history is fated to repeat it,” Davies said..“It is frightening to me as a Canadian that I am seeing our democracy destroyed so willfully in a manner that is just--it's not Canada anymore. And to claim that it's a country of tolerance, when they exhibit almost psychopathic intolerance towards the freedoms we have under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”.Dominion Day was renamed Canada Day in 1982, the same year the Charter came into effect. He believes the country is now abandoning its charter just as it has abandoned the name of its July 1 celebration..“Obviously, the Charter doesn't mean anything anymore. Now we know with absolute certainty that it's a meaningless document because we have decisions being taken that are completely and utterly absent of common sense. They're totally illogical. And they're feeding this basic deviant frenzy that's out there that's neurotic, and it is undermining all our standards and social norms. It is making our country look like a buffoon,” Davies said..When asked if he would head to Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada Day, Davies declined..“No, because I wouldn't go near it. It's crazier than fiction. And we're living that craziness at the moment,” Davies said..In Part II, Davies will share his belief that heavy pandemic restrictions lacked evidence and contributed to the mass shooting in Nova Scotia, and what he called “damning revelations” about the RCMP commissioner.
