An Ottawa criminology professor believes the pandemic, masks, and lockdowns, contributed to the Nova Scotia massacre and that Canadians want to hold governments accountable..In an interview with the Western Standard, Darryl Davies, of Carleton University, said he anticipated a mass shooting soon after the pandemic began..“I told my girlfriend that I would not be surprised if there is a mass shooting in Canada. The tipping point is going to happen, and somebody's gonna go nuts and they're going to kill people,” Davies recalled..“That was not based on the fact that I'm some prophet or soothsayer with great prophetic insight. It's the basic reality as a criminologist that when these types of pressure points occur, some people will react with great rage and hostility.”.Nova Scotia had its first three presumptive cases March 15 and declared a state of emergency one week later. The public was banned from beaches and parks, and on March 29, a Halifax woman was fined $697.50 for entering a park and had her vehicle seized by police..On April 18–19, 2020, denturist Gabriel Wortman committed multiple shootings and set fires at 16 locations, killing 22 people and injuring three others before he was shot and killed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police..“It is difficult enough for people who are complemented to be able to cope with these types of measures and restrictions. What does it mean for people who are non-complemented, who have mental health issues, or are disturbed mentally or emotionally, psychologically? It is extraordinary,” Davies said..“There's no question, absolutely no question that the straw that broke the camel's back in the case of Gabriel Wortman in Halifax was the imposition of the lockdowns and the mask-wearing.”.Davies believes that governments failed at public policy and democratic practice from March of 2020 onward..“There was never any consultation in the House of Commons before these drastic measures of lockdowns and wearing masks was imposed on Canadians. There was no scientific evidence to justify those types of actions. We had the public servants simply falling in line with the government, but nobody questioning the validity and the reliability of what was being proposed to address this virus. It is lunacy,” Davies said..“This was a major issue that should have been put before Parliament. Instead, it was imposed on us. And we were threatened that if we didn't comply, we would pay severe penalties for it.”.Davies believes the collateral damage now evident in hindsight could have been foreseen. .“Oh, it's horrific, without any consideration about the ramifications of such policies on the mentally ill, on domestic violence, and spousal abuse. … We destroyed people's lives socially, economically, and on an individual basis. People lost businesses,” Davies said..“Now, we see that the scientific evidence demonstrates that masks are like a split rail fence when it comes to protecting people from either transmitting or contracting the virus.”.Davies is dually concerned with citizens who have not grasped this sequence of events, and with a federal government that keeps doing the wrong thing..“There are still people driving in cars wearing masks. We're tripping the country into absolute fear and paranoia rather than basing a government decision on scientific evidence,” Davies said..“It is really sad, because instead of engaging and participating — as these politicians claim they will do when they're having their public debates — you're just simply dictating. And that is having major repercussions on people's lack of trust and credibility for government.”.Davies does not believe Canadians are prepared to “wait another four years” to call governments to account..“People are now taking to the streets, people are now being more vociferous in their denunciation of idiotic government policies. That is something foreign to this country. We've never seen that in its history. The seeds of discontent are being sown by this government. They're nurturing them, they're creating this situation,” Davies said..“That worries me for the future of this country because it is out there. People feel this level of frustration and anger.”.As Davies examines the evidence and proceedings of the Mass Casualty Commission, he wonders why louder calls have not been made for resignations over “extraordinary” claims of political interference by the RCMP Commissioner..“It is an embarrassment. It's moral decay. It's [against the] very foundation of what law and order is supposed to be. And we're seeing this in a way that is simply not credible to the public,” Davies said..“That's unbelievable. It's astonishing as far as I'm concerned. As a Canadian citizen, I feel great trepidation at our future when I see laws being ignored by politicians when allegations are made coming out of a public inquiry — damning allegations.”
