On July 17 around 1:10 a.m., the Moose Jaw Police Service (MJP) had a report of a man with a firearm uttering threats, according to the RCMP press release..The MJP found the man in the Moose Jaw Superstore parking lot in a car..For public safety, the MJP redirected the Country Thunder concert Safe Ride shuttle buses to another nearby location while the MJP and RCMP officers dealt with the gunman..The MJP contacted the Saskatchewan RCMP Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and Regina Police Service (RPS) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team for assistance..MJP spoke with the man, but he left the parking lot and drove out of the city, heading east on Highway 1. .Near Belle Plaine, the man pulled over and stopped his car..At this point, RCMP CIRT, RPS SWAT, and MJP Service Tactical Unit arrived on the scene with the MJP Crisis Negotiators attempting to “de-escalate the situation.”.The RCMP redirected the highway traffic to back roads to go around the scene..The man pointed a firearm at the police officers around 7 a.m. and he “did not comply with multiple police officer commands.”.The police responded with a “discharge of a firearm and the man was injured.”.Immediately, police officers with “advanced medical training” provided medical assistance to try to save the man’s life..The man passed away at the scene and the police found the firearm and seized it..The family of the deceased 27-year-old man from Moose Jaw has been notified..If a “police-involved incident results in death or serious injury, an investigation is conducted by an external agency.”.The Saskatoon Police Service and an independent observer appointed by the ministry of Justice will investigate..Also taking part in the investigation is the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.
