NDP leader Jagmeet Singh claimed Alberta Premier Daniel Smith's proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act shows she's "out of touch" with the needs of Albertans.."It's deeply concerning for me that Albertans have a premier who doesn't understand the real risks Canadians and Albertans are faced with," Singh said during a press conference on Tuesday.."And so, that that to me is really a question like 'how could this be a priority when there's so many other challenges going on?'".Smith's 'Sovereignty Within a United Canada Act,' introduced to the Alberta legislature on Tuesday, would allow Alberta cabinet ministers to identify any federal legislation harmful to the province and introduce a motion in the legislature in invoke it..This would allow the province to “stand up to federal government overreach and interference" in areas of provincial jurisdiction, including private property, natural resources, agriculture, firearms, economic regulations, and the delivery of health and education. The bill does not say what would happen if any organization refuses to follow cabinet's directives.Singh said there had been "some really troubling commentary around this act in the past," that has raised concerns.."We've heard from nurses, from frontline healthcare workers, from doctors about the crisis in health care, about kids not getting care and how serious things are across the country and but how serious they are directly in Alberta," Singh said.."And for the premier to think tabling a bill on a Sovereignty Act is in any way something Canadian or Albertan families are worried about right now, when there's kids are struggling to breathe and hospitals, to me shows she is completely out of touch with what Canadians are really dealing with and with what can Albertans are really faced with right now."."The cost of living going up, the healthcare crisis; those are the things that Albertans want help with, not tabling this act.".Alberta's NDP opposition leader Rachel Notley also blasted the proposed legislation.."Danielle Smith's Sovereignty Act is a gross power grab by a person selected by just 1% of Alberta voters," she said on Twitter.."It completely circumvents our democratic process and will have devastating consequences for our economy," she added.
