We all remember getting permission slips signed for field trips, the music festival or the school dance. However, one public school in Ontario just sent home permission slips for students whether or not to accept Canadian flags on Canada Day from a local Lions Club..Sunderland Public School in Ontario recently sent home a letter permission slip which left some Grade One parents scratching their heads..Principal Jennifer Fisher said in the letter, "on June 28, our Grade One students will have the opportunity to meet with a member of the Sunderland Lions Club to learn a little about the history of Canada and why we celebrate Canada Day."."Students will also have the opportunity to receive a Canadian flag from the Sunderland Lion's Club," Fisher stated in the letter.."If you prefer that your child does not receive a Canadian flag please return the bottom portion of this letter to the school prior to June 28.".Fisher then said, "if you do not return the form, your child will receive a flag.".She then instructed parents if they had questions or "concerns about this presentation or the flag" they could contact their child's teacher or the office..It is unclear why the letter was sent home or why the school administration thought students parents would not want their child to receive a flag on Canada Day. .The Western Standard has reached out to Vice Principal of Sunderland Public School for clarification and reply was not received by press time.
