The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) in Ontario has established a policy prohibiting parents from finding out if their children identify as a different gender at school. .“@TVDSB, who are responsible for the education of over 80k students, have guidelines that says school staff should never disclose a student's gender identity or trans status to a parent/guardian,” said Libs of TikTok in a Friday tweet. .The policy said school staff should not disclose a student’s trans or gender diverse identity to people who do not have access to his or her records without consent. .“All students have a right to privacy,” said the policy. .“Schools must keep a student’s trans/gender diverse status confidential.” .The policy said some trans and gender diverse students are not out at home because of safety concerns. It said a school should never disclose a student’s gender identity to his or her parents, classmates, or staff without consent. .When school staff speak with the parents of a trans or gender diverse student, the policy said he or she should be consulted to determine an appropriate way to discuss his or her gender identity. .“If students have first disclosed their gender diverse and/or trans status to staff, it is strongly suggested that staff privately ask trans or gender diverse students at the beginning of the school year how they want to be addressed in correspondence to the home or at meetings with the students parents/guardians,” it said. .This incident comes after a poster was provided to Edmonton students in June teaching them biological sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation were all separate from one another..The poster image is a stick man with four different areas of the body where the different definitions provided belong. .The images were emailed from an Edmonton mother, but she did not provide the school or grade because she was afraid of being identified.
