The Ontario Liberals announced they will slash public transit fares to $1 per trip on every transit line in Ontario if elected in the upcoming provincial election. .“Our plan will provide families with immediate relief within the first 100 days of being elected, by slashing the price of transit to a buck a ride,” said Ontario Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca in a Monday press release..“Under our plan, someone hopping on the GO train from Oakville to head in for a Blue Jays game will save nearly $20 on their round trip.” .Del Duca said if the Ontario Progressive Conservatives are reelected, Ontario will see “billions wasted on one highway that won’t be completed for a decade and will not make a difference on commute times.” Del Duca went on to say the Ontario Liberals will provide people with “immediate relief for their commute and in their wallet.”.The Ontario government announced they will be building Highway 413 in March. .“As we attract more skilled workers to Ontario, we need to build more roads and highways to keep up with population growth,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford..“Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass are a critical part of our plan to build Ontario as we connect communities, reduce gridlock, and get goods to market sooner.”.Highway 413 would run for 59 kilometres from Highway 400 in Vaughan, ON, to the intersection of Highway 401 and 407 at the Brampton-Mississauga border. This highway would connect along the way to Highway 410 and 427. .The Liberals said their plan would apply to municipal transit systems, Go Transit, and the Ontario Northland Railway and would see fares reduced to $1 per ride and $40 for monthly passes until January 2024, according to the press release. .The press release said the provincial government would cover transit systems’ lost revenues at an estimated cost of $710 million in 2022–2023 and approximately $1.1 billion in 2023–2024. .The Liberals will spend $375 million to add more public transit routes, extend service hours, improve accessibility, expand intercity connections, and would make public transit free for veterans, according to the release..Del Duca said reducing fares to $1 per ride will attract new customers. .“Unlike Doug Ford’s broken promise of ‘buck-a-beer,’ we will deliver ‘buck-a-ride’ for all transit riders,” he said. .Ford promised to lower the floor price of beer to $1 during the 2018 election. .Many craft brewers rejected Ford’s push for lower prices, saying they would have to sacrifice quality and profitability to sell beers for $1. .The last Ontario brewer to offer beer for a buck limited the discount to long weekends in 2019. .Jonathan Bradley is a Toronto-based contributor at the Western Standard..jbradley@westernstandard.news
