Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley said in her convention speech at the Hyatt Regency Calgary the large number of people joining the party will enable it to form government in the 2023 election. .“They can see the wrong direction the current government is heading in,” said Notley at the Saturday event. .Notley acknowledged the Alberta United Conservative Party is holding its convention at the same time. While she never thought she would miss former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, she said she does now. .She joked about the head of lettuce competing to see if it would survive longer than British Prime Minister Liz Truss. The question she has is if Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will lose to the lettuce. .She said “it is not enough for us to be not those guys.” She added Albertans want to know its plans. .Notley said the NDP will enact policies to address the worst affordability crisis the province has experienced in 40 years. The party will reinstate a rate cap on people’s utility bills. .It will eliminate the gas tax until inflation is under control. She said she will work with other levels of government to reduce housing prices. .She will launch the most aggressive affordable housing plan Alberta has ever seen. Grocery items increased because of unfavourable weather, higher prices for important inputs such as fertilizer and natural gas, and geopolitical instability related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine..Notley said long wait times in emergency rooms and staffing shortages are “becoming more and more common due to the chaos the UCP is intentionally created in our healthcare system.” She said she will end experiments with private healthcare and repair the public system. .The NDP leader went on to say she will bring real resources to frontline healthcare workers. It will launch the largest healthcare workforce recruitment campaign Alberta has ever seen. .Notley said she will allow Alberta to have more classrooms by building public schools in growing neighbourhoods. She said inside those schools, kids will be “learning from a modern, inclusive curriculum that every student can see themselves in and which prepares them for the economy of the future.” .She said she will require teachers to talk about discrimination, racism, human rights, indigenous people, and reconciliation. These lessons will be taught at an age-appropriate level, starting in kindergarten and going until they graduate. .Notley said her message to Albertans if they want these policies, there is a place for them in this province. .“And if you want to build a better future for our Alberta, you’re not alone,” she said. .“There is a place for you in the Alberta NDP.”
