Gasoline and alcohol prices will see sharp increases on Friday with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) saying the tax hikes aren’t just mean-spirited jokes..“Canadians are struggling with higher prices on everything and the least our MPs could do is cancel the cruel April Fools’ Day joke and end the tax hikes,” said CTF Federal Director.Franco Terrazzano..On Friday, the federal carbon tax will increase to 11 cents per litre of gasoline, 13 cents per litre of diesel and 10 cents per cubic metre of natural gas..The CTF said the carbon tax will add an additional $8.40 to the price of fueling up a minivan..Another price increase Canadians will see is the annual April 1 alcohol escalator tax..Taxes already account for about 50% of the price of beer, 65% of the price of wine and more than 75% of the price of spirits, according to the CTF..“The joke is on taxpayers and it isn’t funny as our members of Parliament pocket a pay raise while emptying our wallets with higher carbon and booze taxes,” said Terrazzano..MP’s will celebrate April 1 with their annual pay raise..The CTF estimates the raises will range from an additional $3,700 for a backbench MP to an additional $7,400 for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau..“Politicians don’t deserve a raise when they make life less affordable with higher taxes,” said Terrazzano..“The federal government should reverse the pay raises and tax hikes.”.Record inflation in Canada already has Canadians struggling..Inflation rose 5.7% while average wages only increased 2.4% over the past 12 months, Statistics Canada reported in February..Stats Can also highlighted the main increases year-over-year from February 2021 to February 2022..The price of gasoline already rose 32.3% in a year before the new tax increase..Homeowners’ replacement costs increased 13.2%, beef went up 13%, chicken up 9%, fresh fruit up 8.2% and bakery products rose 7.4%..Alberta Premier Jason Kenney plans to provide relief for Albertans on April first; he announced on March 7 the provincial fuel tax will be removed to combat the soaring gas prices..Albertans expect 13 cents per litre will be taken off of their gas purchases..Kenney said Wednesday the provincial government will be “watching like a hawk” to make sure the price reduction is given out at stations..Ewa Sudyk is a reporter with the Western Standard.,.esudyk@westernstandardonline.com
