Saskatchewan lost 4,500 jobs in March while most of the rest of Canada added jobs, according to the March 2022 Labour Force Survey released Friday..Premier Scott Moe on his Facebook page touted Saskatchewan created 27,700 jobs over the past year..“Saskatchewan continues to have the second-lowest unemployment rate in Canada with an increase of 27,700 jobs year-over-year, compared to March 2021,” posted Moe..But in earlier comments, Moe said Saskatchewan in the past 12 months had added over 32,000 jobs — so somewhere along with way 4,500 jobs have vanished..In one month, Saskatchewan lost about 14% of the jobs it added over the past 12 months. .NDP critic for the economy and jobs Aleana Young points out the 4,500 jobs lost in a single month which Moe ignored..“Saskatchewan’s labour force is once again trailing far behind the rest of the nation. We have lost 4,500 jobs in a month. That’s the worst in Canada by a huge margin,” said Young. .“Full-time jobs have slipped by 1,600 in March alone, along with a growing unemployment rate. The volatility in Saskatchewan’s labour market won’t increase confidence in consumers.”.The Western Standard sent questions to Moe and received the following statement, not from the premier but the “Government of Saskatchewan.”.“The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Saskatchewan is 5.0% in March, which is the second-lowest among the provinces. That rate is down from 7.2% a year ago, and well below the national average of 5.3%.”.Young thinks the government is off track and not taking responsibility for the direction the province’s job numbers are headed..“With the Saskatchewan Party at the wheel the province isn’t just moving off track: we’re spiralling off the rails,” said Young. .“We need a government that will own up to its issues today, not one stuck living in the past.”.Across Canada, the economy added just 73,000 positions in March 2022 compared to 337,000 in February 2022..Average hourly wages did increase to 3.4% year-over-year but did not match the inflation rate of 5.7%..The average worker lost buying power over this past year because of the high inflation..Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate is at 5%, whereas the national unemployment rate is 5.3%..The national unemployment rate is the lowest in about 50 years..Most of the gains were in Ontario (35,000) and Quebec (27,000), with most being full time jobs..The private sector accounted for over half the increase..The two demographics driving the employment gains were women aged 55 and older, and men aged 25 to 54 years old..Statistics Canada compiles The Labour Force Survey each month..Chris Oldcorn is a Western Standard Reporter based in Regina.,coldcorn@westernstandard.news,Twitter: @chrisoldcorn,.Parler: @chrisoldcorn
