The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms has issued a press release distancing itself from comments made by a lawyer on the Tucker Carlson show..The statement said, “During an appearance on Fox News, the Tucker Carlson Show, on Thursday, July 28, 2022 Alberta lawyer Keith Wilson, who does not represent Ms. Lich on criminal matters, misspoke in saying Tamara Lich ‘committed mischief.’.Lich has been charged with mischief, and maintains her innocence of all charges..The release said the Justice Centre funds Lich’s legal defense but lawyers Lawrence Greenspon and Eric Granger were representing her in criminal matters..“Any and all inquiries and statements regarding Ms. Lich's legal matters must be directed to Mr. Greenspon and Mr. Granger only,” the release said..When asked by Carlson if Lich had committed a violent crime, Wilson said no..“No, she committed the most minor crime we have in the criminal code, Tucker, and it’s called the crime of mischief. It’s the same crime that police if they find teenagers misbehaving, they get them to go home and back to the basement,” Wilson said..“The prime minister, I think, wants to send a message to Canadians that if you dare challenge me and challenge my view of what living under my reign should look like, you will suffer consequences. She is a 49-year-old grandmother and mother, no criminal record. She spent 49 days in jail in ridiculous and troubling circumstances.”.In February, Lich was charged with mischief, obstructing police, counselling others to commit mischief, and intimidation for her role in the Freedom Convoy in Ottawa..Darryl Davies, criminology professor at Carleton University in Ottawa, echoes Wilson’s sentiment that her punishment has been disproportionate..“Many people see the actions that have been taken against Tamira Lich as an abusive and vindictive prosecution. What they are doing to her is tantamount to public denunciation. They are using her as a scapegoat to send a message to the general public that this is what we will do to you if you ever challenge the status quo or ever embarrass the government,” Davies said..“In essence, they are taking a person who has no criminal record and treating her like she is a highly dangerous person. This is outrageous and Canadians should be speaking out about this and demanding justice for Ms. Lich.”.“The governments we are dealing with at the municipal provincial and federal level have an attitude that is so arrogant they think the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms only applies to some issues and people who they support but not to others.".“It is a form of constitutional hypocrisy that should not be tolerated in a democracy that is governed by the rule of law.”
