On this edition of In Focus with Melanie Risdon, David Maybury, a lead data scientist and resident of downtown Ottawa, discusses what he witnessed during the Freedom Convoy and how he believes media reports and testimony from the Emergencies Act inquiry don't match what he saw unfold. .Tune in Tuesday, Dec. 6 @ 7 p.m. MST for the full discussion. .Maybury had a birds-eye view of the Freedom Convoy when it landed in our nation’s capital in late January of this year. .“They literally camped out below my bedroom window,” he said in a blog he released back in February called A Night with the Untouchables. His article went viral at the time. .In his article, Maybury explains how he decided to go out one night and walk among the protesters shortly after they arrived in his neighbourhood. ."I have read a lot about what my new neighbours are supposedly like, mostly from reporters and columnists who write from distant vantage points somewhere in the media heartland of Canada," he wrote. ."Apparently the people who inhabit the patch of asphalt next to my bedroom are white supremacists, racists, hatemongers, pseudo-Trumpian grifters, and even QAnon-style nutters. I have a perfect view down Kent Street — the absolute ground zero of the convoy."."What I haven’t noticed, not even once, are reporters from any of Canada’s news agencies walking among the trucks to find out who these people are. So last night, I decided to do just that — I introduced myself to my new neighbours.".What followed was a rehashing of Maybury's walk among the protesters — a meeting of people from all across Canada and from all walks of life. .Maybury said he followed the Emergencies Act public hearings and is adamant what he has seen and heard from the media and throughout the hearings does not resemble what he witnessed for the weeks the Freedom Convoy occupied the downtown streets of Ottawa.
