The Saskatchewan Party (SP) turned 25 years old on the weekend with a celebration in Davidson, Saskatchewan..Party founder Ken Krawetz, former prime minister Stephen Harper, and Premier Scott Moe spoke at the event..In a press release, the SP said that more than 700 people attended the celebration..“Summers in Saskatchewan are a time for family to come together and this is our family, our Saskatchewan Party’s family moment to celebrate,” said Moe..Harper said when he visited in the 1970s as a kid Saskatchewan was the most socialist province in Canada..“This was the most socialistic, sleepiest province in the country,” Harper told the crowd..Former conservative leader Bill Boyd and former liberal opposition Krawetz announced the new SP on August 8, 1997..“This is, in my view, the only option for setting forward the policies and the platform that we think the people of Saskatchewan want advanced to oppose the NDP in this province,” said Boyd..The SP started with eight MLAs, which were four conservatives and four liberals..It received official party status on September 17, 1997..The SP first came to power in November 2007, with Brad Wall as the leader..The SP formed a government with 38 seats and has remained in power ever since, with 48 seats currently..After over a decade as premier, Wall stepped down and Moe became the new leader in 2018..Moe thanked everyone for what they did since the SP began and said he believes the best is yet to come for the SP..“To everyone that has been involved at whatever level and whatever time over the course of the last 25 years, thank you for what you’ve done, and thank you for what you continue to do,” said Moe..“Let's always stay focused on growth … a growing province with room and opportunity for everyone who wants to call this special place home.”
