Calgary councillor and mayoralty candidate Jeromy Farkas has launched a petition calling for the Calgary Police’s Service not to be defunded..“Calgarians have spoken loudly and clearly in favour of public safety and investment in our essential services. It’s time to stand up for our front lines,” said Farkas in a Tuesday release..City council is currently looking at cutting $20 million from the CPS budget and hand it to social services agencies..Coun. Evan Woolley’s proposal to remove the money over two years from the police budget of $400 million was passed by a vote of 9-5. It now goes to a full council debate..Calgarians can also have their say on the issue at a public meeting on Nov. 23..But Farkas, who is running for mayor next year, said the money should be taken from the city’s rainy day fund or through cuts to things like public art, bike lanes and communications..“Now, more than ever, it’s critical for Calgarians to come together in solidarity with our police,” said Farkas..
