Conservative leadership candidate Jean Charest has called out rival Pierre Poilievre for wanting to destroy institutions that have problems. .“My opponent Mr. Poilievre is very skilled at pointing out problems with institutions and how those problems impact our daily lives,” said Charest in a Thursday email. .“But his 'tear-it-down' rhetoric is neither conservative nor a serious solution.”.Charest said Conservatives should be cautious and strive to make incremental progress. He added the Conservatives have to be the party that “balances the protection of our traditions and values with the need to modernize and reform to meet the challenges of today.”.Charest said he would reform the Bank of Canada by making it more transparent and require it to show Parliament how decisions are made. He went on to say the Canadian government should protect the Bank of Canada’s operational independence and avoid politicizing it. .Poilievre said he would fire the Bank of Canada governor if he became prime minister. .“I would replace him with a new governor who would reinstate our low-inflation mandate, protect the purchasing power of our dollar, and honour the working people who earned those dollars,” said Poilievre. .He said the people who caused rising inflation need to be held accountable..Charest said he would give the ethics commissioner more power to ensure politicians who break the law face substantive punishments. .A Charest government would refocus the CRTC on issues such as access for official languages and people with disabilities and technical concerns. Charest said he would not wade into areas such as content regulation. .He said Service Canada is unable to process passports in time. He vowed to allow certain parts of Service Canada to be subject to market forces and to reward people who can deliver these services on time. .Charest said he supports reviewing CBC/Radio-Canada’s mandate. Defunding the CBC would harm Canada, especially rural and northern communities, he said. .Poilievre has promised to defund the CBC, which has been met with loud applause and chants at his rallies. .Charest said the Conservatives should be skeptical of people who want to tear down institutions. .“Tearing things down is easy,” he said. .“Reform takes courage and principled leadership.”
