University of Ottawa professor Amir Attaran shamed a United Airlines flight attendant on Twitter for not wearing a mask aboard his flight over the weekend. .The professor of law and epidemiology has been outspoken throughout the pandemic against people he labelled "anti-vaxxers" and has often been seen wearing a bulky P100 mask. . University of Ottawa professor Amir Attaran in P100 mask .In the tweet, Attaran called out the airline and asked, "why are you breaking the law?" while including pictures of the attendant.."Masks are required on all flights out of Canada. Your flight attendant isn't wearing one!," he tweeted. ."This is UA3737 in Ottawa right now," he finished, including tags to RCMP, Transport Canada and some mainstream media outlets. .Once he landed in Chicago, he followed up with another tweet saying he chatted with the flight attendant. ."Had a friendly chat with the flight attendant, and found she is blameless because @United misinforms its crew," he said. ."WTF, United? Look here: on flights leaving Canada masks are mandatory the entire travel journey. FOLLOW THE LAW!" .United Airlines eventually responded to his tweet. ."Hi Amir, thanks for bringing this to our attention," it said. ."We've informed the appropriate teams for further review." .Attaran continued his attack on United Airlines with a response back to the carrier that said, "'Further review?' Sorry @United, that's BS," and included a screenshot from Transport Canada. ."Wear a mask throughout your entire travel journey, except for brief periods while eating, drinking or taking oral medication. Surely you can understand that, no?" he tweeted. .The response to Attaran has been harsh prompting the professor to, at times, launch into visceral attacks on those opposed to his tweet. ."See Americans, you get crazy mad about COVID safety and attack science — and then you die," he tweeted. ."You drank the GOP Kool Aid and it's mass suicide, basically."."We in Canada did a lot better. So when you pout and cry about our rules — well, it's kind of cute. Ratio that, motherf---ers." .Attaran included a picture of North America titled 'Cumulative confirmed COVID-19 deaths' per million people, Jun 18, 2022 from the Our World in Data website. .One response by @DonutOperator — a former police and SWAT officer and veteran — responded to Attaran's tweet. ."Oh my god you were that kid in school weren't you?" he asked.."Sure was," replied Attaran. ."Went to university and did great. You were that kid behind the McDonald's counter weren't you?" .The reply prompted many to defend working at the restaurant chain.."What's wrong with working at the counter of a McDonald's?" tweeted Cletus Van Damme. "Sounds like an honest wage." ."I agree with you that the mask policy should be stuck to so long as it exists, but you really don't need to disparage an honest living to make yourself feel superior here," tweeted Jeff Veillette..Michelle Doerksen also replied and said she worked at McDonald's through high school alongside many other people who went on to "successful careers," adding she now has a Masters. ."We learned a work ethic like no other," Doerksen tweeted. "It's so condescending to disrespect hard-working people." .The Western Standard contacted the University of Ottawa for comment on Attaran's social media presence and to see what the university's policy is for its staff on social platforms, but did not receive comment before publishing.
