Jasmine Mian said she is disappointed the city cancelled Canada Day fireworks without consulting council. .“As the voice of the people, I think we could have had a good dialogue about balancing concerns about anti-racism while still celebrating,” said Mian in a Wednesday tweet. .The City of Calgary cancelled its firework display to mark and celebrate Canada Day on May 18. .READ MORE: MORGAN: Woke city of Calgary ends Canada Day fireworks as part of truth and reconciliation.The fireworks were recognized as a fun, cost-effective family event where people could gather in a park and ring in another year of Canada existing as a country. .The City of Calgary said it is ending the fireworks display due to “cultural sensitivities related to ongoing efforts at truth and reconciliation with Canada’s First Nations.” It noted July 1 marks the anniversary of Canada's Chinese Immigration Act. .By cancelling an aspect which is important to many people, Mian said the city “has inadvertently worked against its own goals around anti-racism.” Unlike people in other Canadian municipalities, Calgarians cannot light their own fireworks. .The city councillor went on to say the city should “take the opportunity to provide safe firework viewing opportunities on important holidays like Canada Day.” She added it is rare for city administration to conduct engagement on an idea after a decision is made like it did with this case. .Council found out about this decision along with regular Calgarians, and emails from constituents began flooding in with concerns about the reasons provided for the change.
