Kim Pate (Ontario) said the Senate will be examining Bill S-233 to determine if Canada should enact a universal basic income (UBI). “The bill would introduce a framework to develop a guaranteed liveable basic income,” said Pate at a press conference. “Now is the fact we are struggling throughout this country with homelessness, food insecurity, poverty, health, mental health issues.” .Pate said UBI is one way to look at these issues. While it is not the only way, she said it is a key way. The concept of UBI started to be debated in Canada with two bills before the Senate and House of Commons in 2022.
