Vancouver’s gas stations and commercial parking lots will be required to have electric vehicle (EV) chargers by 2025, otherwise they’ll be have to pony up $10,000 a year..City council unanimously approved the policy, which was first discussed in April as a report titled “Encouraging EV Charging at Gas Stations and Parking Lots — Climate Emergency Action Plan.”.The report says the initiative “aims to encourage owners of gas stations and commercial parking lots to install EV charging where people are accustomed to fuelling up and parking.".As of now, gas stations pay a $243 licensing fee every year. If an EV charger with a total power output of at least 50 kW is not installed by 2025, the fee will jump to $10,000. If installed, the yearly fee remains the same..The licencing fee for commercial parking lots is $163, to which the city will apply the same $10,000 ultimatum, however commercial lots will need to have at least four chargers with an output of 26.6 kW..Lots with less than 60 parking spaces will be exempt..City staff estimates the charger’s install cost will be $100,000 for commercial lot owners, and $136,000 for gas stations — with an expected payback on investments in eight years..Councillors said the initiative will “support” the city’s Climate Emergency Action Plan..Adopted by city council in late 2020, the plan’s objective is to cut carbon emissions to 50% of 2007 levels by 2030, as well as ensure half of the kilometres driven in Vancouver are done so in “zero emission vehicles” by the same date..There are currently 66 gas stations and 366 commercial parking lots licensed to operate in Vancouver.
