Nearly three weeks after BC Premier John Horgan announced his forthcoming retirement, his party confirmed the new leader will be elected on December 3, 2022, prior to which Horgan will step down..The BC NDP says its leadership contest officially began Sunday, and the deadline to join as an eligible voting member is September 4, with voting set to begin on November 13..Each candidate must be a member of the party in good standing for at least 90 days prior to the election date in order to run, and they must submit an application along with an initial entrance fee of $15,000 by October 4..“For his last seventeen years as an MLA and five as premier, John Horgan has shown what’s possible when elected officials put people first and fight hard to make life better for everyone,” said Aaron Sumexheltza, President of the BC NDP in a statement..“I look forward to seeing the candidates who put their names forward for this important job representing New Democrat values and serving the great people of British Columbia.”.As for the candidates, a handful of ministers have confirmed they won’t be running for leadership, whereas not one has officially said they will..As the list of ministers tweeting out confirmation that they won’t be seeking leadership continues to grow, so do expectations that attorney general and minister responsible for housing, David Eby, will be the province’s 37th premier..The Vancouver-Point Grey MLA has not yet announced that he’ll seek leadership of the party, however he remains the presumed frontrunner due to his efforts addressing issues such as the province’s housing crisis, overhauling ICBC, and rampant money laundering in casinos..“David is someone who I admire, someone with integrity, passion, and is the right person to be our next premier and carry on the important work we are doing to build a stronger BC,” said Minister of Jobs Ravi Kahlon, earlier this month..Kahlon was the first to throw his support behind Eby. Since doing so, several more ministers have done the same while others say they’ll wait until all candidates have been confirmed before vocalizing support..Eby is expected to announce that he plans to run for leadership this week and there’s a chance he may be the only candidate in the race..The party has been Horgan’s since 2014.
