Around 150 people gathered for the One Million March for Children at the Calgary Municipal Building to demonstrate for parental rights. “Leave our kids alone,” said One Million March organizer Mahmoud Mourra at the Saturday event. “Brothers and sisters, this fight is one we’re not willing to lose, because I don’t think any of us are willing to lose his son or his daughter for such a predator, for such a pedophile.”.The protest involved people rallying in front of the Calgary Municipal Building, but they marched down Stephen Avenue. Protestors waved Canadian and Albertan flags and held signs with messages such as "Mess with the kids and you will answer to God" and “Stop SOGI (sexual orientation gender identity) in schools.” Protestors did chants such as “Leave our kids alone” and “My kids, my choice.” Unlike previous parental rights protests, most of the participants were white. About 250 counterprotestors congregated near the protestors to offer support to sexual minorities. The counterprotestors waved pro-sexual minority flags and held signs with messages such as “Leave trans kids alone” and “Keep SOGI in schools.” Since there were many of them, separate groups formed at the Calgary Municipal Building and Olympic Plaza. They banged pots and shook bells to attempt to drown out the protestors. The Western Standard attempted to speak with the counterprotestors, but was confronted by Canadian sexual minority activist Shane Unchained. “What are you doing?” said Unchained..Other counterprotestors held up flags and signs to prevent it from taking photos and videos. Mourra said he organized the One Million March because there is division taking place by the Canadian government. He accused it of dividing the movement. He called the Saskatchewan government’s Parents’ Bill of Rights Act “the right thing governments should do.” Now he wants the Alberta government to take a similar stand. The Parents’ Bill of Rights Act passed through the Saskatchewan Legislature on Friday.READ MORE: Moe’s Sask gov’t passes Parents’ Bill of Rights ActIt received 40 yes votes, with 39 coming from Saskatchewan Party MLAs and one from United Party leader Nadine Wilson. There were 12 no votes, and all of them came from Saskatchewan NDP MLAs..Protestor Theresa Lebsack said she is a mother of four and a grandmother of eleven, and she is “very concerned about the inroads that the teachers’ association and the radical gay movement is making into our education system.” “Children at that age in elementary and junior high school do not have the maturity to make those kind of decisions,” said Lebsack. “They can’t give their own authorization to have a tattoo.” Lebsack asked why they can make life-altering decisions such as gender transitions.
