Ezra Levant, 'Commander' of Rebel News, appeared in court Tuesday to quash an order against the organization from the Calgary Police Services (CPS). .The CPS served Rebel News with an Alberta Justice court order in August 2023 demanding the company relinquish all footage related to a gender identity protest in Calgary in May. .However, a matter involving journalistic rights such as this is handled by a higher court, the King’s Bench of Alberta. .“The Calgary Police consented to our argument, so there won’t be much drama today, but I have a feeling this is just the first chapter of the book,” Ezra Levant told the Western Standard prior to the hearing. .Sarah Miller, counsel for Levant and Rebel News, told the judge she had a consent order from the provincial court. .“The application is to quash the order from the provincial court,” Miller said. “The Crown also indicated the Alberta government would not be appearing. They provided a letter stating they will not participate or provide consent.”.The judge approved the consent order, commenting that she had read up on the case specifically beforehand as it is “not a run of the mill” civil case. .“It’s as good as done, unless we hear from them again,” Miller told the Western Standard following the proceedings..“Until we hear from them again,” Levant chimed in. “I think we’ll be hearing from them again.”.“But we’ll be ready. I’ll come after them,” he added. “I’m not going to let those guys cancel me, I’m going to cancel them.”.Levant said Rebel had already published 25 minutes of footage from the event in question. .When asked why the police are pursuing Rebel’s leftover footage that didn’t make the cut, he said it was because the police wanted to get everything possible Rebel had documenting Josh Alexander, the 18-year-old man leading the protest against gender indoctrination in schools. .“It’s about Josh Alexander,” Levant said. “They want to get him too.”.Levant explained more about the situation in a newsletter published earlier in the day. ."This is personal for the Calgary police," he wrote. "They hate Rebel News. And that hatred has clouded their judgement."."That’s why I’m in court today, for an emergency hearing to get a more senior judge to throw out the abusive court order against me," he continued. "The order was issued by the wrong court. It used the wrong law. The judge used the wrong legal standard. And the court order had to be served on us personally, not sent to us by email."."There are literally five fatal flaws in this thuggish document."
