A wildfire is still burning in Jasper National Park as Parks Canada firefighters move into more technical terrain..On Wednesday, Parks Canada stated the estimated size of the Chetamon wildfire burning in Jasper National Park is approximately 6 hectares.."The wildfire remains active, with smoldering and creeping surface fire around the perimeter," Parks Canada stated.."It is not unusual for individual trees to burn or to see visible flames or spot fires from long distances.".Parks Canada said it currently has 96 firefighting personnel and five helicopters dedicated to containing the Chetamon wildfire..According to Parks Canada, no communities are threatened by the wildfire at this time. However, smoke continues to drift into Alberta from wildfires in BC.."Firefighters are making their way around the Chetamon wildfire perimeter and into more challenging terrain. Many areas on lower slopes have been contained. Parks Canada continues to work with ATCO Electric to facilitate safe access, material staging, and danger tree removal for power line repairs," Parks Canada said..Parks Canada stated, "on the north end of the Chetamon wildfire, crews are working to extinguish several hot spots in more difficult-to-reach locations and reinforcing the containment line from the Snake Indian River south to the Athabasca River."."On the south end, crews are working in steeper areas on Mount Chetamon and a ridge above the Snaring River to extend an established containment line and to extinguish hot spots. Firefighters are also patrolling the south perimeter and completing a fireguard north of the Jasper Transfer Station," Parks Canada said..Parks Canada would also like to remind Albertans that drones have been grounded during peak wildfire operations.."Flying drones in a national park, especially near a wildfire, endangers the lives and well-being of everyone working in the area. Using recreational drones in Jasper National Park is dangerous and illegal, carrying a maximum fine of $25,000," Parks Canada said.
