Alberta NDP Leader Rachel Notley revealed her plan for managing the provincial surplus and outlined her priorities for Alberta's revenue windfall, noting the NDP will not "piss away this boom" in Alberta..On Thursday, Notley said she spends a lot of time on the highway and she always sees the bumper sticker, "God give me one more oil boom. I promise not to piss it all away next time."."Well, we got one more oil boom. And it has been extraordinary revenues into the treasury," Notley said.."We understand that this revenue cannot be used for ordinary operational spending. The actions we take in government will reflect this understanding. The surplus must be saved and invested for the future.".Notley said she has a "plan" on how best to do that..Notley committed to five principles in handling the province’s current windfall:.Recognizing this revenue is unreliable and simply cannot be used for ordinary operational spending. Focusing on getting the best return on investment, through consultation with Albertans and financial experts from Alberta and around the world.Recognizing Alberta will not get off the revenue rollercoaster without real progress on diversifying the economy and creating sustainable, long-term jobs. Immediate action to help Albertans facing an emergency cost-of-living crisis, one not seen in four decades.Repairing the damage done to the public healthcare and education systems.."We will do so through the lens of getting the best return on investment for Alberta and will consult experts. We will take an advice here in Alberta and quite frankly from experts around the world as we move forward.".Notley said during the press conference that Albertans will not get off the "revenue roller coaster" until the government makes real progress on diversifying Alberta's economy and creating sustainable long term jobs.."Our investment strategy must be focused on growing new industries in a forward looking for a short and more immediate term. We also understand that we are facing an emergency cost of living crisis, one not seen or experienced, at least for decades.".“Let me be even more clear, the vast majority of this surplus must be saved and invested for the future.”.Although the surplus can't be used for operational cost, Notley still said: "We believe health care and consumption are being underfunded in a way that is damaging our quality of life and our future."."When it comes to the surplus of opportunity to build our future Albertans deserve after all, this money belongs to you.
