Alberta's NDP leader Rachel Notley says current UCP MLAs who spoke about not supporting Premier Danielle Smith's proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act must do so..On Tuesday, Notley held a press conference in Rosedale Park in Calgary to call on all UCP MLAs who publicly opposed the Alberta Sovereignty Act to commit to opposing it in the legislature.."I have written to every member of the UCP, we have asked them to oppose the sovereignty act in the legislature if they were speaking the truth on the leadership contest trail," Notley said.."The bottom line is they cannot allow this bill to pass. It is time to put province before the party and to do the right thing.".According to Notley, Alberta's economy depends on attracting billions of dollars every year, and then the folks who deploy that capital are looking for certainty and stability.."If they see Alberta heading down a path of chaos and conflict under Danielle Smith, they will simply go elsewhere, and they will create those jobs in other places," Notley said.."This is a time when Alberta is struggling, when Alberta workers are already struggling with the slowest wage growth in the country. And the worst affordability crisis in 40 years. We can't allow that to happen.".Notley told the media she hopes there are enough UCP MLAs who are willing to join the Alberta NDP in defeating this bill.."Protecting our energy sector, protecting emerging economic sectors, and most importantly, protecting Alberta jobs," Notley said with concerns about the bill being possibly defeated..Rob Anderson, Smith's campaign chair for the UCP leadership and now executive director of her transition team, told CBC News in a story published Saturday that Smith's proposed Sovereignty Act won't empower Alberta to disregard Supreme Court rulings..Anderson did mention the act, which has not been drafted yet, would "have a whole head of very sharp teeth" and "change the dynamic" with Trudeau's Liberal government..Smith's spokesman Jonah Mozeson, declined comment to CBC News when asked about Anderson's statement..However, he did mention, "As the premier designate has said, the Sovereignty Act will be drafted in accordance with sound constitutional principles. The premier looks forward to working with the caucus to draft legislation that protects and asserts Alberta's constitutional rights in accordance with the rule of law.".According to Notley, this is unacceptable.."If Danielle Smith and one of her most senior political advisors don't know what it is they're talking about, what that means is foreign investors are not going to know what they're talking about," Notley said..According to Notley, during the UCP leadership race, many UCP MLAs voiced their opinion about the Alberta Sovereignty Act..Brian Jean said it's nothing more than “virtue signalling”, a “fiscal fairy tale” that doesn’t make any sense and won’t work. Rajan Sawhney said the Sovereignty Act will create “an unconstitutional delusion that will lead the United Conservative Party, and Alberta, down a dangerous path.”.Rebecca Schultz called it the Anarchy Act; “a false dream that will turn into a nightmare.”.Travis Toews said the act would take us backwards because it would create chaos. He also shared a graphic that called the legislation “A time-ticking bomb.”."I believe if they're not going to do what they said they were going to do up until the leadership vote, then they should just walk away from the whole thing altogether, and more importantly UCP MLAs need to stand up for Albertans and demand that they do that."
