Canada’s Prairie premiers are calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Joe Biden to restore pre-pandemic operating hours at entry points at the Canadian border..On Monday, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta premiers released a letter written on September 27 to Trudeau and Biden to argue reduced hours at border crossings are hurting the economy.."Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, North Dakota, and Montana are calling on Biden and Trudeau to immediately restore the pre-pandemic hours of operation at the border to ensure the efficient and steady flow of people and goods between our two nations," Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said on Twitter..The letter written to Trudeau and Biden states, "We are writing to request that you immediately restore the pre-pandemic hours of operation at the Canada US land border ports, especially given president Biden's recent comments on the pandemic being over."."Residents and businesses on both sides of the border have expressed concern the reduced hours of operation will become permanent. Forcing travelers and businesses to drive to another border crossing with longer hours of operation is simply not economical due to the distance view and labor costs," the letter stated..According to the letter, reduced hours of operation at the crossings hurt the economy of the border communities in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, Montana, and North Dakota.."We are also concerned about the economic impact. The reduced hours of operation will have on supply chains and trade between Canada and US. This will be to the determinant of the border. Canada US trade relationship which has been established through a long-standing history of considerable effort by both countries to ensure that goods and people can country continue to move freely across the border.".'We're assuming pre-pandemic operating hours will ensure the efficient and steady flow of people and goods which will only improve trade activity and reduce inflationary pressure on both sides of the border.".According to Canada’s Prairie premiers, in 2021, bilateral trade in goods and services between Canada and the US reached $1 trillion, which is an all-time high.."The world is facing ongoing supply chain issues that continue to disrupt their economies. And it is critical that our federal governments provide the necessary resources to ensure that our national supply chain remain stable and resilient.
