The Democrats were waiting for the media release of a leak from the Supreme Court of the United States that might end the landmark ruling of Roe v. Wade that made abortion legal throughout the United States..Within minutes of the announcement – even when it was not clear whether the leak was real or not – protesters were in the streets and Democratic leaders were ready with talking points.."If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Monday in a joint news release Monday.."The Republican-appointed justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history," Pelosi and Schumer declared.."Several of these conservative justices, who are in no way accountable to the American people, have lied to the U.S. Senate, ripped up the constitution and defiled both precedent and the Supreme Court’s reputation – all at the expense of tens of millions of women who could soon be stripped of their bodily autonomy and the constitutional rights they’ve relied on for half a century.”.But it’s important to remember a few things before the left uses this issue to prolong its unworthy grip on power in the United States – or potentially in Canada..First, this is a draft opinion from one Supreme Court justice that by no means represented the final opinion of the court. This is all about the Democrats desperately trying to find an issue that will help them sustain their power in the House of Representatives and the Senate. They have nothing else to offer but fear of the unknown. They have a failed president who is barely coherent; escalating inflation; rampant crime; an open southern border that is an open invasion to illegal immigrants, drug cartels, human smugglers and terrorists; and a war in Ukraine that shows no signs of ending..The one thing that can energize the Democratic base is the issue abortion..But the U.S. Supreme Court is not advocating the end of abortion; it is potentially saying that the states should decide whether abortion is legal and that is what is already occurring in America. Conservative Republican states are restricting or banning abortions while liberal Democratic states are making it more accessible. This only makes sense. So don’t let the left tell you that conservative judges are taking away abortion rights; they are merely allowing voters in the 50 states to decide what those rights are..Abortion remains a polarizing and divisive issue in the states with Americans equally divided over it. This decision from the court is a solution to that debate. Most Americans – as well as most Canadians – are opposed to unrestricted abortion on demand. They believe there should be some obstacles to abortion and this will allow the states to nuance the law accordingly..For that reason, this decision will not destroy the Republicans’ chances of capturing the House and Senate in the midterm elections. Not only are Americans split on the issue of abortion, most people casting a ballot in both parties are not single-issue voters and do not decide for whom they are voting solely on the basis of where a candidate stands on abortion. Voters are not going to ignore the mess that the Democrats have created simply because the party wants to uphold Roe v. Wade..The reaction of some Democrats to the leak has already been disgusting. Whoever released this draft opinion to the media is no whistleblower or hero but an activist thief who should be dismissed immediately..Democrats are already talking about passing a law to “codify” Roe v. Wade and ending the filibuster in the Senate so the Republicans couldn’t stop the legislation in the upper chamber. Next, they will be renewing their calls to pack the Supreme Court itself in order to avoid any other rulings they disagree with..Will this affect politics in Canada? I hope so. Canada needs a reasonable debate about abortion and pro-life voters and political candidates should not be marginalized from the public square because the issue has somehow been settled. It has not. Canada has no abortion law and that is a disgrace. There is absolutely no protection for the unborn in this country and frankly even pro-choice voters get a little squeamish when considering partial birth abortion. Personally, it’s enough to make me puke..But the left has imposed censorship on the abortion debate and declared it off limits and that is completely unacceptable. Open debate on even the most hot button issues should never be verboten..The abortion debate will not impede the removal of the Justine Trudeau regime by a conservative-minded government. Even though MP Pierre Poilievre (CPC-Carleton) is not a pro-life leadership candidate he will garner the support of many pro-life voters because they see him as the only winning alternative to Trudeau and as right on so many other issues. Peoples Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier has always promised a free vote on the issue and that is fair too..We should never be afraid of America’s longtime love of political debate and policy disagreement. We need more of it in Canada. Here we can’t talk about abortion, aren’t supposed to support gun rights, are afraid to oppose critical race theory, can’t decry the demonization of our historical icons like Sir John A. Macdonald and are chastised for opposing internet censorship..Freedom is about debate and we should not recoil from it in Canada..David Krayden is the Senior Parliamentary Columnist for the Western Standard
