According to a new poll, Pierre Poilievre (CPC-Carleton) is headed to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada..However, in reporting those results from an Ipsos poll, Global News somehow decided the survey also suggested that Poilievre would probably have trouble increasing the strength of the party..Really? A poll, commissioned by Global, that predicts the future? Actually, there’s nothing I can see in the poll that suggests any such thing. But there’s plenty at Global News and all the mainstream media that doesn’t want Poilievre or any Conservative leader to grow the party because they like being on Justin Trudeau’s media gravy train and don’t care if they have to sell their souls in the process by being laptop journalists who only see broad, sunlit skies for the Liberal government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau..The poll indicated 20% of Canadians surveyed believe Poilievre will be the next leader while 37% of Conservative voters think so. His nearest rival is former Progressive Conservative (PC) leader and Quebec Liberal Premier Jean Charest who has almost been forgotten by present day voters. Charest got the thumbs up from just 12% of Canadians and 14% of Conservatives. That’s not enough to go to bed on..And just like I told you a few weeks ago, Charest is actually viewed more as Liberal than as a Conservative. His favourability among Liberal voters is 40% while it’s just 27% among Conservatives, the poll found..Poilievre had a 50% approval rating among Conservative voters while “nearly half of Liberal and NDP voters” view him negatively..So that means more than half of Liberals and NDP voters don’t view him negatively. So where’s the growth problem? The last time a federal party approached 50% of the vote was in 1984 when PC leader Brian Mulroney walked away with a landslide..And Poilievre could also win what has become known as the Brexit vote in the U.K., or the independents who haven’t been voting because they don’t see any reason to when all three major political parties have the same talking points..Ipsos Public Affairs Vice-President Sean Simpson summed up the Conservative leadership race this way..“We’ve really got this tale of two candidates.”.Yes, one is a Conservative and the other is a Liberal — and a Liberal whether he is wearing a PC or CPC hat..One is attracting huge crowds at events across the country and the other could be meeting his supporters in a phone booth. In fact, Charest launched his leadership bid in a garage. Nice optics..It reminded me of those pitiful Joe Biden presidential election campaign events when he was convinced to leave his Delaware basement for a few hours. He would show up in front of parked cars like he was the featured attraction at a drive-in or a grocery store special..But just as Global News is telling you Poilievre is going to have trouble growing the party, expect the Trudeau media to tell you a lot more about him that is factitious and mendacious. The war has already started on social media where anyone writing something vaguely positive about Poilievre is subject to the hate speech from the left. Do I want them banned? No, the more they tweet the more they look ridiculous..Why would anyone declare a Poilievre rally in Calgary or Edmonton reminded them of a Klan convention unless he or she was mentally unbalanced? The left automatically plays the race card when they are in attack mode: they have learned that tactic well from Justin Trudeau who instinctively accuses all of his political opponents of being racist despite the fact that he was the renowned black face performer..Just why is Poilievre being accused of racism? Was it because he too had a fondness for blackface, belonged to a white supremacist organization or had been caught using racial epithets?.None of the above..Poilievre is being branded as a racist by left-wing wing-nuts because he supported the Freedom Convoy and of course the Freedom Convoy was racist because Trudeau told us all that it was composed of white supremacists and Nazis..Oh..Do you see how political slander works in this country? If you’re Justin Trudeau, it’s okay to actually cross the racial line as long as you blame innocent Canadians for your indiscretion; if you’re a Conservative named Poilievre you don’t actually have to exhibit any racist tendencies but the Left can accuse you of them anyway — even if there isn’t any guilt by association!.So wait for it. Poilievre might be able to win the Conservative leadership race but the mainstream media will tell you he can’t and shouldn’t become prime minister because he’s too extreme for all those nice liberal voters who embrace the status quo with the same passion that makes them immune to Trudeau’s preponderance of flaws..So we’ll do a reality check every week if must needs be. Those people flocking to the rallies are not in love with the febrile status quo. They aren’t empowered by the government picking their pockets and controlling their lives. They want systemic change and they want it now. And they won’t be misled by media outlets who have a vested interest in keeping the current gang of swindlers in power..David Krayden is the Senior Parliamentary Columnist for the Western Standard
