Another Alberta politician is riding off into the sunset..On Thursday, MLA Richard Gotfried for Calgary Fish Creek made it official he will not be seeking re-election for the seat..In June 2021, Gotfried stepped down as the party's Calgary caucus chair so he could allow himself to "speak unreservedly on matters of principle, ethics, government and caucus operations.".During the time, he slammed the premier for having a rooftop meeting..In June 2021, Premier Jason Kenney, three of his ministers and four other people dined on a rooftop patio, drawing criticism from some who say they broke the province's gathering rules and recommendations..Kenney eventually took "full responsibility" for the meeting and apologized to Albertans..Gotfried was born in and was raised in Calgary and has lived in Calgary Fish Creek for 30 years.."I have enjoyed the district honour of representing the people of the great constituency since first being elected as a Progressive Conservative MLA in 2015. Following that, hard-fought election where I was one of only eight PC MLAs remaining in the Alberta legislature," Gotfried said.."I was sworn in as the 900th member of the Legislative Assembly with a lifetime of interest in involvement in Alberta politics and over 30 years of success in varied executive roles in the private sector.".Gotfried said he was blessed with the support of his family, friends, dedicated supporters, and volunteers during his career. He said he's always been committed to his district and Albertans.."It has not always been easy, but these commitments reflect the position that reflects the person I will always strive to be before during, and after politics. So it is with mixed emotions and with deep respect for the opportunities that lie ahead for all Albertans that I share with you today my formal announcement that I will not be seeking reelection in 2023," Gotfried said.."As you're a member of the Legislative Assembly, on the motivation behind my decision, it was always my intention to bring a fresh lens to politics and do so with passion energy, and deep commitment to my family, friends, and neighbors. But I was also cognizant of the demands of the role with respect to family and life balance and being in my eighth year of service.".However, until May 2023 Gotfried plans to stick around until the next election.."I commit to serving my term with the same passion energy and commitment to whoever is selected by UCP members as our new leader and premier while remaining focused.".Gotfried did not endorse any of the seven UCP leadership candidates.
