The views expressed in the following Opinion column are those of the author and not necessarily shared by the Western Standard..With our next provincial election in less than a year, it’s critical that we, the UCP members, choose the right leader. We can't afford a leader who over promises and under delivers, or who loses the trust of Albertans..I’ve put a lot of thought into what makes a great leader, and I’ve determined that a great leader is a lot more than a great speaker..A great leader inspires people with vision and genuinely earns their support..A great leader is authentic, humble, and easy to communicate with..A great leader is open-minded, willing to listen to others, and is focused on finding solutions..Most of all, a great leader is in it for the right reasons and never forgets who they are working for..Sometimes as Conservatives we seem to think the job of leading our party is one of being a great actor or a great news reader. We often choose the best talker in the race and then we are disappointed when they turn out to be all talk. Inspiring, engaging, empowering, and listening all seem to me to be better leadership traits than just talking..Political leaders who rely on talk and then have an absence of getting things done has created frustration amongst Albertans. We are frustrated with the Trudeau Government and Ottawa's interventions in our affairs. We are tired of the stress that has dominated our lives for the past two years. Most of all, we are frustrated and tired of feeling like our voices are never heard..I feel this way too and want more than anything to elect a leader who will stand up for us while not forgetting to listen to us..But we need to remember that our challenges are so much more complex than just standing up to Trudeau. Let's be honest — the vast majority of our problems were made by consecutive provincial governments, and the fix we need is often local and Alberta based..We need a leader who understands and can manage our resources, while having the willingness to.engage with Albertans before making decisions that affect our lives. I believe that leader is Brian Jean..I have known Brian for years. From running several successful businesses to making things happen in Ottawa as an MP, I trust Brian’s ability to find solutions to problems. His tenacity to keep fighting for Albertans following the loss of his son, and his home twice — in the Fort McMurray fires and then floods — proves he has the courage and the strength to stand up, when many would give up. Most importantly, Brian has a vision that inspires me; that Albertans can be “the happiest, the healthiest, the most free and prosperous people in Canada and the world.”.My friends, Brian is my first choice and I hope he is yours too..Ed Ammar was founding chairman of the United Conservative Party.
