AHS says after reviewing the delayed response by EMS to a fatal mauling of an elderly Calgary woman, it's been found the incident was initially reported as non-life-threatening to 911. .According to AHS' initial review, a witness at the scene of the attack of an 86-year-old woman by three pit bull-like dogs called 911 and based on information provided to dispatch, the call was categorized for police response. .Calgary Police Services (CPS) communicated to EMS they were responding and "based on information provided to EMS, the call was triaged as non-life threatening," said AHS in a statement. ."When CPS arrived on scene, they notified EMS that the patient's injuries were serious. EMS immediately dispatched an ambulance, which arrived on scene nine minutes later." .AHS said the incident occurred during "a time of very high EMS call volumes," but once deemed high priority, "an ambulance was dispatched immediately." ."AHS is discussing these findings further within EMS and will reach out to CPS to identify any further learnings from this tragic incident."."Minister (Jason) Copping is relieved to hear the initial review by AHS confirms there was no undue delay in the EMS response," said Steve Buick, Copping's press secretary. ."It doesn’t change the fact that this death was a terrible tragedy, or the need to address the strain on EMS."."We need to keep supporting EMS and adding whatever resources are needed until we get response times back within AHS’s targets, where they were until last summer when volumes surged by up to 30%.".On Sunday, an 86-year-old woman was attacked by three unknown dogs in the community of Capitol Hill while gardening in a back alley. .Nearby neighbours said they tried to intervene during the attack, including the dogs' owner, who was successful in removing the dogs from the scene before first responders arrived. .The woman, who has yet to be identified, waited up to 30 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. She was eventually transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, but died a short time later. .The three dogs have been identified at a North American pit bull terrier mix, a North American Staffordshire mix and an American pit bull. The dogs have been seized by Calgary Community Standards and are being held while the investigation continues.
